President Donald Trump’s approval rating has slipped as his second term unfolds with aggressive new trade policies, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll. Just 43% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, while 51% disapprove, giving him a net approval rating of -8 points.
That marks a five-point decline in approval over two weeks. In the previous poll, Trump’s favorability was nearly even at 48% favorable and 49% unfavorable.
The dip follows Trump’s announcement of sweeping tariffs on foreign imports, which prompted retaliatory measures from nations including China. While Trump later paused most tariffs for 90 days to allow for negotiations, the poll suggests the initial impact dampened public support.
Analysts noted Trump began his second term with stronger approval ratings than at any point during his first. The survey of 1,741 U.S. adults was conducted April 5–8 with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
