Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy of Montana has proposed abolishing the U.S. Department of Education, claiming it serves to “indoctrinate and enslave” students. During a campaign stop in Billings, Sheehy argued, “We have a Department of Education, which I don’t think we need anymore. It should go away. That’ll save us $30 billion right there.” He added that the department’s original purpose, ensuring school integration, was no longer necessary.
The Department of Education, created in 1979, enforces laws prohibiting discrimination in schools. Roughly 150,000 students attend public schools in Montana. Conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, have long advocated for the department’s elimination, favoring local control over education.
Sheehy, a businessman and former Navy SEAL, is running to unseat Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.). Tester criticized Sheehy, saying, “Tim Sheehy doesn’t give a damn about our public schools. I’m a proud product of Montana’s public schools…and I’ll fight to protect them.”
Tester faces a challenging re-election campaign in a state that has shifted Republican in recent years.
