Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has officially endorsed Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential race, following Trump’s significant lead in the Super Tuesday primaries. McConnell, a prominent figure within the Republican Party and previously hesitant to openly support Trump, expressed his backing shortly after Nikki Haley withdrew from the race. He emphasized the achievements made during Trump’s presidency, such as transforming the federal judiciary and appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices. McConnell looks forward to shifting from defense against current policies to a proactive approach aimed at enhancing American lives.
Despite a historically tense relationship between McConnell and Trump, particularly after the January 6 Capitol attack, McConnell’s endorsement comes as part of a broader Republican consolidation around Trump’s candidacy. McConnell, who has announced his intention to step down as Senate GOP leader by the end of the year, reiterated his commitment to support the Republican presidential nominee, aligning with his past statements of backing Trump if he were the nominee. Senator Joni Ernst also endorsed Trump, emphasizing the goal to defeat Joe Biden and realign the country’s direction.
