Attorneys representing multiple news organizations, including NPR, have filed a legal motion stating that video evidence from the case of Jan. 6 rioter Glen Simon has disappeared from an online government platform. The missing files include nine video exhibits from the Justice Department’s case against Simon, who pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and admitted to pushing against police with a metal bike rack while declaring, “this is what a revolution looks like.”
The Justice Department has not explained whether the files were intentionally removed. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C., declined to comment due to ongoing litigation. Former prosecutors worry that the Trump administration may be attempting to erase records of the Capitol attack.
Since taking office, Trump has granted clemency to over 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants and removed a government website tracking the cases. Media attorneys are asking the court to order the files’ restoration and require an explanation within 48 hours.
