Former Vice President Mike Pence has publicly urged Congress to pass legislation that would lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S., citing concerns over the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) through the app. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Pence criticized the tolerance for TikTok, labeling it as a vehicle for CCP-sanctioned propaganda and a threat to the minds of American children.
A bipartisan bill, introduced by Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), aims to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, divests from it. This move has sparked debate, with TikTok arguing that the legislation infringes on First Amendment rights and impacts small businesses relying on the platform.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee has already advanced the bill, and President Joe Biden has expressed readiness to sign it into law, pending Congressional approval. Pence, highlighting the urgency of the situation, described TikTok as “Chinese spyware” and emphasized the risks it poses to Americans’ privacy and the potential for CCP influence over American youth.
