Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson won the House Republican nomination to remain as Speaker in a voice vote with no objections. Johnson will need a majority of 218 votes in the full House on January 3 to retain the position.

President-elect Donald Trump has voiced strong support for Johnson, reportedly telling House Republicans he’s “with Johnson all the way.” Johnson, who praised Trump as the “comeback king,” likened their roles to a “coach” and “quarterback” preparing for a united GOP-led government.

Johnson, elected in 2016, became Speaker in October 2023 after turmoil within the GOP. His agenda includes mass deportations, tax cuts, and federal workforce reductions. The final House vote for Speaker is set for January 3, 2024, amid projections that the GOP will control the House.
