House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) defended the “Big Beautiful Bill” on Fox News Sunday, dismissing Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) claim that the House-passed budget legislation would “explode the debt.” Paul called the bill’s spending cuts “wimpy and anemic” and said he would only support it if the proposed $4 trillion debt limit hike were removed.
Johnson countered that the debt ceiling extension does not equate to new spending, but signals seriousness to creditors and markets. “It does not mean that we’re going to spend more money,” he said.
Johnson praised President Trump as “dialed in 100 percent” and “a visionary leader” aligned with reducing the national debt. He added that the bill includes “the biggest spending cut in the history of government on planet Earth.”
Paul remained unconvinced, saying Republicans are falling “in lockstep” without confronting the country’s mounting debt. “Somebody has to stand up and yell, ‘The emperor has no clothes,’” he said.
The bill now faces an uncertain path in the Senate.
