President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to enact mass deportations has led some migrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily before his inauguration on Monday, according to immigration attorney Rolando Vasquez. Many of his clients who entered under the Biden administration fear deportation under Trump’s policies.
A shift in Mexico’s stance on deportations is also influencing decisions. Mexico is now accepting non-Mexican deportees, affecting Cuban and Venezuelan migrants who previously avoided deportation due to their countries’ refusal to accept returnees from the U.S. “Many migrants are leaving, fearing deportation to their home country or Mexico,” Vasquez explained, adding that most prefer not to stay in Mexico.
Reports indicate newly deported migrants in Mexico face risks of exploitation, kidnapping, and extortion by cartels and smugglers. Mexico’s plans for safeguarding deportees remain unclear.
