Michigan State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) announced she underwent voluntary sterilization in response to President Donald Trump’s return to office. Speaking at a protest at the Michigan State Capitol, Pohutsky said she made the decision due to concerns about reproductive rights under Trump’s leadership.
“Just under two weeks ago, I underwent surgery to ensure that I would never have to navigate a pregnancy in Donald Trump’s America,” she stated. “I refuse to let my body be treated as currency by an administration that only sees value in my ability to procreate.” Pohutsky did not cite any specific policies or statements from Trump to support her concerns.
A strong advocate for abortion rights, Pohutsky has pledged to fight for reproductive autonomy and push back against any restrictions under the new administration. She currently serves as chair of Michigan’s Progressive Women’s Caucus.
