Following President Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Mexico and Canada, both nations have enacted retaliatory measures. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the move, advocating for diplomacy over economic penalties. She directed Mexico’s Secretary of the Economy to implement “Plan B,” which includes tariffs and other trade restrictions to protect national interests.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned Trump’s decision, imposing 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion in U.S. imports, including alcohol and fruit. “The actions taken today by the White House split us apart instead of bringing us together,” Trudeau stated.
Both leaders expressed frustration with Trump’s trade policies, signaling escalating tensions between the three North American trade partners.
