First lady Melania Trump said Friday she has been in communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reunite Ukrainian children displaced by war with their families. Speaking from the White House, she said her efforts began in August 2024 when she wrote to Putin expressing concern about children separated by the conflict.
“President Putin responded in writing, signaling a willingness to engage directly,” Trump said, adding that both sides have held “back-channel meetings and calls” focused on humanitarian cooperation. She confirmed that eight Ukrainian children were reunited with their families in the past 24 hours, including three sent to Russia and five separated across borders.
Trump said Moscow also agreed to return minors who turned 18 while displaced. “Peace can begin with our children,” she said.
More than 19,000 Ukrainian children have been deported or transferred to Russia since the 2022 invasion, according to Ukrainian officials.
