Pundit Megyn Kelly sparked controversy after mocking a Democratic National Convention speaker who celebrated attending a historically Black college. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat, highlighted her and Vice President Harris’s shared experience of graduating from historically Black colleges during her speech.
Kelly responded on social platform X, writing, “Imagine the white person up there: I’m proud to tell you I went to a mostly white university!” This comment drew backlash online. Commentator Bill Kristol criticized Kelly, pointing out that historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were established to serve Black Americans at a time when most U.S. universities limited their enrollment.
Journalist Matt Yglesias and former Democratic aide Keith Boykin also criticized Kelly, with Boykin accusing her of ignoring America’s racial history.
Butler’s speech was part of a broader effort at the convention to showcase diversity within the Democratic Party. Prominent Democrats, including former President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, are scheduled to speak later in the week.
