Twitter restricted access to critical tweets in Turkey ahead of the presidential election at the request of the Turkish government. Critics accused Twitter CEO Elon Musk of abandoning free speech principles by complying with the order.
Musk defended his decision, stating that it was either limit access to some tweets or have Twitter throttled in its entirety.
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales criticized Musk and suggested that Twitter could have been more transparent about Turkey’s request.
Musk’s compliance with government takedown requests is a departure from his promises to support lawful free speech on Twitter.
