Fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey issued a blistering email to former colleagues Thursday, warning that “fear is the tool of a tyrant” just one day after she was removed from the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office without explanation. Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was abruptly fired from her post after nearly a decade handling high-profile prosecutions, including cases tied to Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
In her email, Comey said her dismissal threatens to chill prosecutorial independence. “If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain,” she wrote. “Do not let that happen.”
Comey’s termination follows public frustration with the DOJ over its memo stating that Epstein had no “client list” and died by suicide—an assessment widely rejected by Trump’s base. Critics allege her firing is politically motivated, given her father’s role in the Trump-Russia probe and past tensions with the president.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the decision came from the Department of Justice, not the president. Nonetheless, Comey’s message underscores growing concerns about political influence over the justice system.
