Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) accused the Department of Justice of using concerns over victim privacy as a “strawman” to justify not releasing the full files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Speaking on Meet the Press, Massie said the bipartisan legislation he co-authored with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) was carefully designed to redact victims’ names and omit any explicit content.

“They’re hiding behind that,” Massie said, adding, “We’re doing this for the victims.”

The Epstein files have paralyzed House business, with Speaker Mike Johnson refusing to bring the bill to the floor. Massie and Khanna have initiated a discharge petition to force a vote, now delayed until after the August recess.

Khanna also emphasized that the victims themselves support the release. Citing Bradley Edwards, attorney for many Epstein victims, Khanna argued the DOJ “never cared” about securing justice for the victims and that public disclosure—with redactions—offers a path to closure.

“This is about healing,” Khanna said.

The bipartisan push adds pressure on the DOJ and House leadership as calls for Epstein file transparency grow louder from across the political spectrum.
