On Monday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order pardoning 175,000 marijuana convictions at the Maryland State House in Annapolis. Accompanied by Attorney General Anthony Brown and other officials, Moore’s order will pardon over 150,000 misdemeanor convictions for simple cannabis possession and more than 18,000 for possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.
Maryland, the first state to pardon convictions related to cannabis paraphernalia, legalized recreational marijuana use last year following a 2022 constitutional amendment.
“We cannot celebrate the benefits of legalization while forgetting the consequences of criminalization,” Moore stated on X. “Today, we take a big step toward enacting the kinds of policies that can reverse the harm of the past and help us build a brighter future.”
The pardons do not entail the release of any incarcerated individuals.
