Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for his handling of a continuing resolution (CR) aimed at preventing a government shutdown, accusing him of making secretive “swamp deals” that lacked transparency. Greene, chair of the House subcommittee for the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), claimed Johnson excluded most Republicans from decision-making and relied too heavily on Democratic support to pass the measure.

In a social media post, Greene proposed Elon Musk for Speaker, arguing his leadership could overhaul Congress and promote government efficiency. She stated, “The establishment needs to be shattered… this could be the way.”

Johnson faces increasing opposition within his party as he approaches a Jan. 3 vote for Speakership. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) have also voiced skepticism about Johnson’s leadership, with Paul echoing Greene’s call for Musk to disrupt traditional politics as Speaker.

The immediate challenge for Johnson remains Friday’s funding deadline, where GOP divisions over short-term funding measures and debt ceiling increases complicate efforts to avoid a government shutdown. Johnson’s ability to unite his party will be critical to passing any legislation without Democratic support.
