A man was arrested Tuesday night after crashing his vehicle into a U.S. Secret Service gate near the White House, authorities said. President Trump was inside the residence at the time but was never in danger, according to officials.
The incident occurred at 10:37 p.m. at the security gate on 17th and E Streets, near the south side of the White House complex. The Secret Service said the crash did not trigger a lockdown, though nearby streets were closed temporarily as investigators examined the scene.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the driver was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. “DHS privacy policy prohibits the release of names until charges are formally filed by the U.S. attorney’s office,” Guglielmi stated.
USSS spokesperson Melissa McKenzie confirmed that both the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department assessed the vehicle and deemed it safe. “Additional information will be provided upon conclusion of the investigation,” she said.
The White House has not yet commented on the incident, while the Metropolitan Police referred all questions to the Secret Service. The investigation remains ongoing.
