Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, has been charged in connection with an apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in Florida earlier this month. A court document revealed on Monday that Routh dropped off a box at a civilian’s home, which contained ammunition, phones, and a letter stating, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.”
Routh was arrested on Sept. 15 after being spotted by a Secret Service agent with a rifle near the golf course where Trump was playing. The agent fired at Routh, who fled but was later apprehended on Interstate 95. A search of Routh’s vehicle uncovered cellphones, false license plates, gloves, and documents, including a list of Trump’s appearances and notes about Ukraine.
Routh has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He is due in court Monday. Authorities are investigating further details of the case, including Routh’s movements and intentions in the weeks leading up to the incident.
