Vem Miller, a longtime supporter of Donald Trump, was arrested Saturday for attempting to pass a checkpoint with loaded firearms outside a Trump rally in Coachella Valley, California. Miller, who is a Trump caucus captain and grassroots activist, was charged with possession of a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine. He was released on $5,000 bail the same day.
Clark County Republican Party Chairman Jesse Law confirmed Miller’s involvement as a committed volunteer and dismissed any suggestion that Miller posed a threat. Miller, for his part, called the notion that he was planning to harm Trump “ridiculous” and denied claims made by law enforcement about his anti-government stance. He also accused officers of abusing their authority and plans to sue.
Former Clark County District Attorney David Roger and former federal prosecutor Kathleen Bliss questioned the Riverside County Sheriff’s claim that Miller’s arrest thwarted an assassination attempt. They noted that possessing a gun near a former president is not equivalent to planning an assassination. Miller’s social media features pro-Trump and anti-Kamala Harris content, including posts that make vulgar comments about the vice president.
