A man armed with knives and Molotov cocktails was arrested Monday at the Capitol after telling police he intended to target Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other Republican officials, court filings reveal.
Ryan Michael English voluntarily approached Capitol Police, admitting he had weapons and planned to kill Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or Speaker Mike Johnson. He also expressed intentions to attack the Heritage Foundation. A search of his vehicle uncovered materials for additional Molotov cocktails.
English traveled from Massachusetts without a cellphone, using an atlas to navigate. His target shifted to Bessent after reading about his confirmation online. He allegedly planned to throw Molotov cocktails at Bessent’s feet and stab him if possible.
His arrest follows a series of security incidents at the Capitol, including recent weapon-related arrests. English faces charges for unlawful possession of firearms, explosives, and dangerous weapons on Capitol grounds.
