Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani held a massive rally Sunday in Queens alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), urging voters not to be complacent despite his strong lead in polls. “While Donald Trump’s donor billionaires think they have the money to buy this election, we have a movement of the masses,” Mamdani told thousands gathered at Forest Hills Stadium.

The rally, featuring speeches from key progressive leaders, cast the November 4 election as a battle between “democracy and oligarchy.” Sanders called the race nationally significant, saying, “A victory here in New York will give hope and inspiration to people throughout our country and throughout the world.” Ocasio-Cortez added, “In nine short days we will work our hearts out to elect Zohran Kwame Mamdani as the next mayor of the great city of New York.”

Mamdani credited Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez for inspiring his platform of rent freezes, free public transit, and universal child care. The rally also highlighted growing unity between progressives and establishment Democrats: Gov. Kathy Hochul, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie attended in support.

Hochul praised Mamdani’s “grace and grit” while condemning Islamophobic attacks against him, declaring, “That kind of bullsh*t doesn’t belong in New York.” The event’s slogan — “New York Is Not for Sale” — targeted wealthy donors backing independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

Early voting surged this weekend, with more than 164,000 ballots cast — five times the turnout seen during the same period in 2021.
