A Quinnipiac University poll found that 59% of U.S. voters support implementing a social media ban similar to Australia’s recent law prohibiting children under 16 from using platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, X, and Reddit. YouTube is exempt from the Australian law.

While most groups supported the idea, voters aged 18-34 were more divided, with 50% in favor and 46% opposed. Overall, 31% of respondents opposed a ban.

The poll’s findings coincide with the U.S. Supreme Court’s upcoming review of a potential nationwide TikTok ban. The court will hear arguments on Jan. 10 regarding a law requiring TikTok to separate from its Chinese parent company or face a ban. The platform recently filed an emergency application to delay its Jan. 19 divest-or-ban deadline.

The Quinnipiac survey, conducted Dec. 12-16 among 924 registered voters, has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
