A new survey by Chief Executive magazine shows a majority of U.S. business leaders disapprove of President Trump’s sweeping tariff policy. Of more than 300 chief executives polled, 67% opposed the president’s tariff plan, and 76% said the import taxes would negatively impact their companies.
The survey, conducted April 8–10, also revealed declining optimism among executives. On a 10-point scale measuring current business conditions, the average rating fell to 4.6, down from 5.0 in March — the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020.
“Tariffs and the uncertainty of next steps that will be taken by President Trump will lead to very difficult economic times over the next year or two,” said Tim Zimmerman, CEO of Mitchell Metal Products.
Others echoed similar concerns. “I support tariffs but believe they need to be applied strategically, not globally,” said Donald H. Lloyd II, CEO of St. Claire HealthCare.
