A new poll shows 56% of Republicans now support same-sex marriage, a significant shift a decade after the Supreme Court’s Obergefell ruling. The poll, conducted by Redbud Consulting, Echelon Insights, and National Research for Project Right Side and Centerline Liberties, surveyed 800 registered voters from May 27 to June 1, 2025.
When a neutral option was included, Republican support dropped slightly to 40%, with 43% opposed and 17% neutral. Among all Americans, support is stronger: 72% favor same-sex marriage outright, and 61% still do when a neutral choice is offered.
On Obergefell itself, 51% of Republicans disapprove, but when neutrality is an option, 41% approve, 37% disapprove, and 22% are neutral. Among all respondents, 68% approve of the decision.
Supporters of same-sex marriage are more likely to say the issue is important (59%), compared to 53% of opponents. Thirty-one percent say they’ve grown more supportive over time.
Pollster Alex Lundry says the data shows same-sex marriage is now “an accepted social norm” no longer politically divisive.
