A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday found that 58 percent of Americans believe the U.S. military should only be deployed to confront external threats, while just 25 percent support broader domestic use of troops. The results come as President Donald Trump continues deploying National Guard forces to cities including Washington, Los Angeles, Memphis, Portland, and Chicago, moves that have drawn legal and political challenges.

The survey revealed deep partisan divisions. Among Democrats, 72 percent said troops should be used only for external threats, compared to 51 percent of Republicans and 53 percent of independents. Just 37 percent overall said a president should have the authority to send troops into a state without a governor’s consent.

Eighty-three percent of respondents said the military should remain politically neutral — a view held by 93 percent of Democrats, 78 percent of Republicans, and 80 percent of independents.

The poll surveyed 1,154 U.S. adults online between October 3–7 and carries a 3-point margin of error.
