Following the Arizona Supreme Court’s upholding of a near-total abortion ban, several Republicans voiced their opinions. The 1864 law, predating Arizona’s statehood, allows abortions only when a mother’s life is at risk.

Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake opposed the ban, stating, “I understand the fear and anxiety of pregnancy and the joy of motherhood. I wholeheartedly agree with President Trump — this is a very personal issue that should be determined by each individual state and her people.” This is a reversal for Lake, who previously praised the law.

State Rep. Matt Gress criticized the law as antiquated, saying, “This territorial law which was last upheld in 1913 bans abortion, except to save the life of the mother. Let me be clear: This cannot stand.” He added that the politics of the abortion debate have overshadowed policies that protect women and new life.

The reactions followed former President Donald Trump’s announcement that states should have the right to create their own abortion laws. Trump faced criticism from Sen. Lindsey Graham, to which he responded, “Many Good Republicans lost Elections because of this Issue, and people like Lindsey Graham, that are unrelenting, are handing Democrats their dream of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency.”
