Maine Republican lawmakers are advancing a suite of bills that would restrict the rights of transgender students in athletics, school facilities, pronoun use, and broader anti-discrimination protections. The legislative push comes amid federal investigations and vocal support from Donald Trump, who singled out the state over its inclusive policies.
The proposed measures include bans on trans girls in girls’ sports (LD 868, LD 233, LD 1134), restrictions on bathroom access and a bill mandating teachers use only legal names and birth-assigned genders unless a parent authorizes otherwise (LD 1002). Other bills would amend or remove gender identity protections from the Maine Human Rights Act.
Gov. Janet Mills and civil rights groups have defended the state’s inclusive laws. Mills said the issue is “worthy of debate” but continues to uphold court rulings protecting trans students.
Equality Maine called the legislation a dangerous step backward that could increase harassment and limit civil rights for youth across the state.
