Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate, has filed a $20 million claim against the Trump administration, alleging false imprisonment and malicious prosecution. The claim, submitted under the Federal Tort Claims Act, names the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and the State Department, and follows Khalil’s 104-day detention in a Louisiana immigration jail.
Khalil was arrested March 8 without a warrant, despite being a legal permanent U.S. resident. He says he was transported without explanation, denied ulcer medication, and held in harsh conditions while missing the birth of his son in New York. “This is something I will never forgive,” Khalil said.
Though never charged with a crime or tied to extremist groups, the administration publicly branded Khalil’s activism as “pro-terrorist.” A memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued his beliefs posed a threat to U.S. foreign policy. A judge later ruled his detention likely violated the Constitution.
Now free, Khalil vows to continue speaking out against Israel’s war in Gaza, which has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. He says any restitution would be shared with others impacted by government retaliation.
