Prominent MAGA figures, including Donald Trump Jr., have falsely claimed the Minnesota shooting suspect was a Democrat, despite evidence he held conservative beliefs and supported Donald Trump. The suspect, Vance Boelter, is charged with murdering Rep. Melissa Hortman and injuring Sen. John Hoffman—both Democrats.
Boelter’s appointment to a state workforce board by Democratic governors fueled conspiracy theories, but friends told reporters he opposed abortion, voted for Trump, and would be “offended” to be called a Democrat.
Still, MAGA-aligned voices including Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) shared misleading posts tying Boelter to “Marxism,” calling him a “Tim Walz appointee” and suggesting a leftist motive. Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno and Elon Musk echoed similar claims without evidence.
Authorities say Boelter had a hit list of mostly Democratic officials, and acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson said any ideological motive is “way too speculative.” Boelter’s alleged connections to Democrats remain unsubstantiated.
