Louis DeJoy resigned Monday as postmaster general of the U.S. Postal Service, accelerating a leadership transition amid growing uncertainty about the agency’s future under President Donald Trump. Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will serve as acting head while the USPS board searches for a permanent replacement.

DeJoy, who informed the board in February of his plans to step down, said in a statement that the Postal Service had made “enormous beneficial change” but still faced work ahead. “Much work remains that is necessary to change our positive trajectory,” he said.

Appointed in 2020, DeJoy, a GOP donor, presided over a period of intense scrutiny as the agency became entangled in partisan battles over mail-in voting and cost-cutting.

President Trump has proposed dramatic changes to the USPS, including potentially merging it into the Department of Commerce. He has repeatedly criticized the agency as a “tremendous loser” and floated the idea of privatization.

DeJoy’s departure now clears the way for Trump and his allies, including Elon Musk, to reshape the Postal Service’s mission and structure.
