WASHINGTON, D.C. — Conservative activist Laura Loomer claimed Monday that officials in the office of Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll are attempting to orchestrate a “coup” to remove Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — an allegation Pentagon officials did not address when contacted for comment. The claims come amid scrutiny of Hegseth’s leadership following recent controversies, including reported illegal strikes on a suspected drug boat in the Caribbean and earlier incidents involving war planning conducted via private messaging apps.
In a lengthy post on X, Loomer said Driscoll and his allies were pushing to have him elevated to replace Hegseth, citing what she described as favorable media coverage portraying the Army secretary as a rising Pentagon figure. Loomer asserted that Trump “loves” Hegseth and criticized those she said were seeking to undermine him.
Driscoll, a longtime adviser to Vice President J.D. Vance and a key figure in diplomatic outreach efforts, has recently led talks related to the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East negotiations. Administration sources told Politico there is currently more confidence in Driscoll’s diplomatic abilities than in Hegseth’s.
Loomer also linked the alleged effort to ongoing investigations into six Democratic lawmakers who appeared in a November video urging military members to reject unlawful orders — comments Trump and Hegseth labeled “seditious.” Among them is Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.), a Naval Reserve intelligence officer and spouse of former national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Loomer noted a previous $2,800 donation Goodlander made to Driscoll’s congressional campaign as suspicious, though no evidence has been presented of improper coordination.
Pentagon and White House officials did not respond to requests for comment. Loomer, now credentialed to attend Pentagon briefings, said she plans to raise the matter publicly.
