London Mayor Sadiq Khan escalated his criticism of Donald Trump following the former president’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly this week. Trump labeled Khan a “terrible mayor” and suggested London “wants to go to Sharia law.”
Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor, strongly rejected the comments, calling Trump “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.” He told reporters Tuesday, “I think people are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor…that means I appear to be living rent free inside Donald Trump’s head.”
The exchange marks the latest in a long feud between the two leaders, which began during Trump’s 2016 campaign and intensified over his first-term travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries. Khan has repeatedly opposed Trump’s policies and rhetoric regarding Islam.
In his U.N. address, Trump linked Khan to mass migration in Europe, warning, “Both the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something is not done immediately.” Sharia councils, which advise on family disputes, have operated in the U.K. since the 1980s, but they hold no legal authority.
Khan’s office said it would not dignify Trump’s remarks with further response, while emphasizing London’s diversity and record appeal to Americans moving abroad.
