Former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney condemned President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that members of the January 6 House committee, including herself, “should go to jail,” calling it an “assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic.” Cheney responded after Trump, in an NBC interview, accused committee members of destroying evidence and labeled them “political thugs” and “creeps.”
In a statement to the New York Times, Cheney refuted Trump’s claims as baseless, asserting that there was “no factual or constitutional basis” for targeting committee members. She warned that any attorney pursuing such actions would face sanctions. Cheney reiterated that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election by inciting a mob and called his remarks part of a continued attack on the Constitution.
The controversy unfolds as reports emerge that President Biden may consider pardons for individuals who could become Trump’s political targets. Although efforts to prosecute Trump for the Capitol attack have ceased after his election victory, Cheney urged the preservation and disclosure of evidence collected by special counsel Jack Smith.
