Nine LGBTQ, health, and civil rights organizations filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Trump administration over three executive orders that target transgender rights and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, challenges orders that revoke DEI grants, restrict gender-affirming care, and eliminate recognition of transgender individuals from government policies.
The groups, represented by Lambda Legal, argue that the executive orders threaten federal funding for organizations serving marginalized communities. Tyler TerMeer, CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, said his group’s funding was frozen as “an attempt to intimidate us into silence.”
The lawsuit follows broader moves by the administration to roll back LGBTQ protections, including directives to remove references to transgender and nonbinary individuals from federal websites. Civil rights groups warn that these policies will severely impact public health services and support systems for vulnerable populations.
