The legal nonprofit Democracy Forward filed a lawsuit Friday against the Trump administration, accusing it of violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by failing to release Jeffrey Epstein-related documents.
According to the complaint, the group submitted multiple FOIA requests to the Department of Justice and FBI on July 25, seeking expedited access to communications between senior administration officials regarding the Epstein probe, including correspondence between Trump and Epstein, and records related to agency review of the matter.
While the government acknowledged receiving the initial request, Democracy Forward says its appeal for urgency was ignored. The lawsuit asks the court to compel the agencies to produce the records quickly, calling the matter “of significant public importance.”
Axios reports this is the first legal challenge to the administration’s handling of the Epstein files. The Trump administration has not commented on the lawsuit.
