Justice Democrats, the group behind progressive wins like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 2018 upset, is shifting back to its founding mission of unseating establishment Democrats deemed insufficiently progressive. After losing ground in recent cycles, including the defeats of Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush in 2024, the group announced a nationwide recruitment push for primary challengers in blue districts and open seats.

Spokesperson Usamah Andrabi said the focus will be on districts with corporatist representatives and where community input guides priorities. The group referenced 71-year-old Rep. George Latimer, who unseated Bowman, as a potential target, pointing to Congress’s aging demographics.

Progressives have faced setbacks, particularly following the Israel-Hamas war in 2023, as groups like AIPAC funded challenges to pro-Palestinian lawmakers. While some progressives distance themselves from primary fights, Justice Democrats remain committed to challenging incumbents.
