BRYAN, Texas — Newly leaked emails obtained by NBC News reveal that Ghislaine Maxwell, serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking, described her life at a minimum-security Texas prison as “much, much happier,” prompting questions about her treatment and federal policy compliance. Maxwell was transferred to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in July, despite Justice Department rules barring sex offenders from being housed in such facilities.
In her emails, shared with members of Congress, Maxwell said, “The food is legions better, the place is clean, the staff polite,” contrasting it with her previous Florida facility, where she claimed “possums fell from ceilings” and hygiene was poor. Reports suggest Maxwell may have received special privileges, including private meals, late-night workouts, and extended shower access, leading critics to call it “VIP treatment.”
Other inmates reportedly faced threats for discussing Maxwell, with one transferred after speaking to reporters, according to The Wall Street Journal. Her attorney, David Oscar Markus, condemned the publication of her private emails as “tabloid behavior.” The Justice Department declined comment. Maxwell’s appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court last month, leaving a potential presidential pardon from Donald Trump as her only path to early release before 2037.
