The League of Women Voters has initiated a lawsuit to halt the use of artificial intelligence to produce deceptive robocalls. This follows an incident in which a robocall mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice misled New Hampshire voters.
Filed against political consultant Steve Kramer and two Texas companies, Lingo Telecom, and Life Corporation, the lawsuit demands fines and a prohibition on AI-generated robocalls without consent from those impersonated. The contentious robocall, distributed days before the New Hampshire presidential primary, falsely claimed voting early would disqualify voters from participating in November’s election.
Kramer, who organized the call, purportedly aimed to highlight AI’s dangers and provoke legislative action. However, plaintiffs argue the robocall aimed to suppress voter turnout, with former Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring challenging Kramer’s defense. The lawsuit comes amidst broader concerns over AI’s role in spreading election misinformation, prompting regulatory discussions and preventive measures against AI misuse in political campaigns.
