A coalition of immigrant-rights groups and the League of Women Voters has filed a federal lawsuit against Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares. The lawsuit accuses them of implementing an illegal “purge” of voter rolls that risks disenfranchising legitimate voters. Filed in Alexandria, the suit argues that Youngkin’s August executive order violates a federal law requiring a 90-day halt to voter roll updates before elections.
The lawsuit highlights the use of DMV data to determine voter eligibility, which it claims is often inaccurate, particularly for immigrant citizens. It states that many naturalized citizens are being wrongfully removed due to outdated information. The plaintiffs request that the court halt the purge program and reinstate voters who have been removed.
State officials have not commented on the lawsuit.
