With polls showing a tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, lawmakers from both parties are preparing for potential disputes over election results, especially in key battleground states. Democrats fear Trump may claim election fraud if Harris wins early, repeating tactics from 2020.

Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) voiced concern about Trump’s rhetoric, warning it could cause chaos if the results are close. Republicans like Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) have raised concerns about noncitizens influencing the election, though such claims lack significant evidence. Some states, including Arizona and Georgia, will require hand counts of ballots, which could delay results.

Democrats worry that Trump’s growing influence within the GOP could lead to more lawmakers supporting challenges to election results, despite reforms passed to prevent a repeat of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
