Miami, Florida — Florida state Sen. Ileana Garcia, a Republican and co-founder of Latinas for Trump, sharply criticized the Trump administration’s immigration approach, warning that President Donald Trump could lose the 2026 midterms because of White House adviser Stephen Miller.

In an interview published Tuesday, Garcia said she supports border enforcement in principle but blamed Miller, the deputy chief of staff for policy, for what she described as aggressive tactics and inflammatory rhetoric. “I do think that he will lose the midterms because of Stephen Miller,” Garcia said, arguing that recent actions risk alienating Latino voters who previously supported Trump.

Her remarks follow heightened scrutiny after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti during an immigration enforcement protest in Minneapolis, weeks after another fatal shooting involving an ICE officer in the same city. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Pretti attacked officers, while Miller described him as a “would-be assassin.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later said the president had not used that characterization and emphasized that investigations are ongoing.

Garcia pushed back publicly, writing that labeling Pretti a terrorist or assassin contradicts the values Trump campaigned on and would have lasting political consequences. She said allowing senior officials to make such statements undermines trust and damages the administration’s standing with key constituencies.

Garcia, who helped mobilize Latina support for Trump in 2016 and previously served at the Department of Homeland Security, has increasingly criticized what she has called “inhumane” deportation tactics. Observers say her comments reflect broader unease within Republican circles as immigration becomes a central issue ahead of November’s midterm elections.
