Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is expected to vacate his Senate seat to serve as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State, prompting speculation about his replacement. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has the authority to appoint Rubio’s successor, has not disclosed his plans but faces pressure from prominent Republicans to select Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee Co-Chairwoman and Trump’s daughter-in-law.
Lara Trump expressed gratitude for the support and indicated she would consider the role if asked. “It’s a great honor and responsibility,” she said on Fox Business, adding that she has not yet heard from DeSantis. Republicans like Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) have endorsed her, citing her alignment with the America First agenda and experience in election integrity efforts.
DeSantis will appoint a replacement once Rubio’s resignation is finalized, with frontrunners reportedly including Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, and DeSantis’s chief of staff, James Uthmeier. Whoever is chosen will serve until a special election in 2026 for the remainder of Rubio’s term, with another election for a full term in 2028.
