Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison on Wednesday, where 238 Venezuelan migrants were deported by the Trump administration despite a U.S. court order blocking their removal.
The migrants are alleged by the administration to be gang members, deported under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. A federal appeals court this week denied a request to lift the restraining order on the deportations, as lawsuits from the ACLU and Democracy Forward argue the law was misused to bypass immigration protections.
Noem’s visit signals the administration’s intent to press forward. “If you come to our country illegally, this is one of the consequences you could face,” she said in a video, standing near prisoners with tattoos some claim indicate gang ties. Experts argue such tattoos are not reliable indicators of affiliation, with families and attorneys stating the deported men were misidentified.
Defense attorneys say at least five were detained based on misunderstood body art linked to Latino culture.
