The Kremlin stated on Sunday that it did not believe the U.S. administration was responsible for the assassination attempt on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania. However, it suggested that the current atmosphere in the U.S. had provoked the attack. Trump was shot in the ear, and the attacker was killed by law enforcement, who have yet to determine a motive.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “We do not believe that the attempt to eliminate and assassinate Trump was organized by the current authorities,” but noted that the environment surrounding Trump’s candidacy contributed to the incident. President Joe Biden condemned the attack, emphasizing that there is no place for such violence in America.
Russia condemned the violence, with Peskov reflecting sentiments from Trump’s Republican allies who blamed Biden for creating a hostile atmosphere. Peskov mentioned no plans for President Putin to contact Trump regarding the incident. World leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, condemned the attack and wished Trump a quick recovery.
Russia’s foreign ministry used the incident to criticize U.S. funding for Ukraine’s military, urging a focus on domestic law enforcement. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova questioned the allocation of funds to Ukraine instead of improving U.S. police services.
Amidst the heightened tensions between Russia and the West following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Peskov refrained from commenting on the impact of the attack on the legitimacy of the upcoming U.S. election, asserting it was an internal U.S. matter.
