The Kremlin denied reports on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump spoke last week about the war in Ukraine. The Washington Post reported, citing anonymous sources, that Trump urged Putin on Thursday not to escalate the conflict, referencing the significant U.S. military presence in Europe. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov refuted the report as “completely untrue, it is pure fiction.”
When asked for comment, Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung said, “We do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders.” Although Putin previously congratulated Trump on his election win, Peskov stated that “there are no specific plans yet” for a future conversation. However, he indicated that communication between the two before Trump’s inauguration was not ruled out.
During his campaign, Trump suggested he could quickly end the Ukraine conflict, though he provided no specifics. Meanwhile, Russia has continued strikes on Ukrainian civilian areas, and Ukraine recently sent a wave of drones that reached Moscow and nearby areas.
