Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Sunday that the Trump administration is using the deportation case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to distract from growing economic concerns tied to tariffs.
“They have picked out this case and this man because it’s about a subject that they want to keep in the news,” Klobuchar said on CNN’s State of the Union, referencing fellow Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-Md.) trip to El Salvador to meet Abrego Garcia.
She accused the administration of “flaunting the law” and using the issue to divert attention from the economic impact of Trump’s trade policies, which have caused market volatility.
Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident deported in what the government called an “administrative error,” remains imprisoned in El Salvador. Despite a Supreme Court order requiring the administration to “facilitate” his return, officials have blamed El Salvador for the delay.
Klobuchar emphasized that the administration is choosing not to follow the law in this case, calling it a strategic move timed with economic turmoil.
