Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is poised to lose the first vote for speaker, likely sending the House to a second ballot, after more than five Republicans opposed his nomination. Without those Republicans, McCarthy would need Democratic support, which is highly unlikely.
Conservative Republicans had vowed not to vote for McCarthy and succeeded in blocking him on the first vote. Members will now proceed to additional ballots until a candidate reaches the 218-vote majority. The House cannot begin any business until it elects a speaker.
