The Kennedy Center has canceled a week’s worth of scheduled LGBTQ+ events tied to this summer’s World Pride festival in Washington, D.C., prompting backlash and venue changes from artists and organizers. The cancellations follow a February shake-up in leadership by Donald Trump, who removed the institution’s president and chairman, replaced the board, and named himself chairman.
The “Tapestry of Pride” series was originally slated for June 5–8. Events including the International Pride Orchestra and drag story time were either canceled or relocated. The Capital Pride Alliance has now cut ties with the Kennedy Center.
“There would need to be a very, very public statement of inclusivity… Otherwise it is a hostile performance space,” said Michael Roest of the International Pride Orchestra, whose performance was moved to Bethesda’s Strathmore theater after last-minute termination.
Organizers say communication from the Kennedy Center ceased following the leadership change. The center has not issued a public explanation. Critics, including longtime collaborators, accuse the Trump-appointed board of marginalizing queer communities and dismantling long-standing partnerships.
