Former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre sharply criticized Democratic leaders in a tense interview with The New Yorker’s Isaac Chotiner, accusing them of orchestrating a “full-on campaign to embarrass” President Joe Biden and push him out of the 2024 race. Jean-Pierre, promoting her new memoir about her time in the White House, described the party’s treatment of Biden as a “betrayal.”
“I was the person on that podium taking all the hard questions,” she said. “It was an all-out campaign to embarrass him, to push him out.” Jean-Pierre added that, as a Black woman and member of the LGBTQ community, she feels current Democratic leadership has failed to protect vulnerable groups.
Chotiner pressed her on whether Democrats were justified given polling that showed Biden trailing Donald Trump. Jean-Pierre replied, “Nobody knows anything… there was an incumbency issue as well,” pointing to other G-10 nations where incumbents lost re-election.
Addressing Biden’s health, Jean-Pierre acknowledged his age but insisted he remained “engaged, on top of policy, and challenging his staff daily.” She dismissed claims that aides concealed his condition, saying his age was “no secret.”
